Exploring Czech Cuisine
A look at some of the traditional Czech food.
If you’re anything like me, one of the highlights of traveling aside from capturing moments through photography, would be food. I’m always eager to try cuisines from different countries I visit. And when I visited Prague, I knew I was in for a treat to try some Czech Cuisine!
My observation of Czech cuisine was that it seems to consist a lot of meat. There’s nothing wrong with this – I love meat, pork veal, beef, duck… and sausages, lots of different kinds of sausages, from plain meat sausages to full of spice kind of sausages. I also noticed that Czech cuisine loves some carbs in it. Potato soup, potato salad, potato dumpling, potato pancakes… Also, let’s not forget the bread with herbs, and sometimes slightly stale pastries.
Aside from dumplings, there’s goulash, and they’re amazingly delicious!
And sauces… lots of sauces that come with different grilled sausages – cranberry sauce, plum sauce, tartar sauce… and all the magic that goes into it. And these sauces usually have some kind of kick of spice to it, sometimes tangy, sometimes too strong, but as you chew it, the aftertaste tends to be pleasant in the end, that you’ll want another bite.
Then there’s the veggies… red cabbage, snow peas, more potatoes, onions…
And as far as soup, the Strong Beef Soup or Beef liver soup I had was delicious.
My favorite dish was the lamb chops. It was the bomb.
Take a look at some of the traditional Czech food I ordered at Restaurace Mincovna:
Traditional Potato Soup (with mushrooms, fresh marjoram, vegetable and truffle oil)
Assorted Grilled Sausages (with red onion salad, mustard sauce and bread)
Strong Beef Soup (with vegetables and three kinds of dumplings – liver, meat, bun)
Traditional Beef Goulash (served with Viennese onion and potato dumpling)
Grilled Hanger Steak with Morel Mushroom Sauce (with potato pancake and buttered snow peas)
Overall Verdict: Hearty, and flavorful
