Destination Charleston: The Southern Gem
Things to do and places to see in Charleston, SC.
Charleston, this gem could easily seduce you with its Southern charm – from the warmth and hospitality of Charlestonians, delicious food, historic landmarks, to overall dynamic culture and vibe. That is why when the girls, Jovy (from Colorado), Rhiz, and Fritchie (both from Canada) came over to visit the Carolinas, I arranged a getaway for us in Charleston.
Charleston is a dynamic city. No, it’s not full of skyscrapers and clubs. And no, it is not about mountains and pulled pork sandwiches…
Here are some quick highlights of what Charleston is all about, and what it has to offer:
1. It’s the classic and historic architectures, the colorful houses, the coastal settings…
Waterfront Park is a well-known park with water views and fountains.
We walked by the Rainbow Row, a cluster of old Gregorian-style houses from 1748 to 1845 in pastel paints
French Quarter known for its cobblestone streets
The Battery and White Point Gardens feature palmettos and oak trees, statues, cannons, gazebo, view of Fort Sumter, and more sights.
Historic Charleston City Market offers tons of variety of goods – from food, souvenirs, candles, to spices. Mostly are locally made.
2. The food scene is all about delicious dishes from amazing restaurants where most get approval and high praises from Bon Appétit… And they’ve got great places for drinks too!
Experience Nitrotini at Market Pavilion, a cocktail infused with liquid nitrogen cooled to -320 Fahrenheit! Click here to learn more about Nitrotini.
Peninsula Grill is one of my favorite places to eat in Charleston. It’s an upscale fine dining steakhouse and seafood restaurant. They have the most delicious, flavorful dishes – from steaks to seafood. SO GOOD!
Craftsmen Kitchen & Tap House is a good place for late night beer and bites.
3. Shopping experience that embraces both top brands and one-of-a-kind boutiques – inviting you to check out some of the most unique and fashionable finds.
King Street is where it all starts.
Some recommendations to shop are Haute Hanger, House of Sage, and Finicky Filly.
Some parts of King Street reminds me a little bit of some parts in Montreal, but this is just a personal opinion.
4. Embrace relaxation by the beach.
Folly Beach Pier stretches more than 1,000 feet into the ocean. Great for a scenic stroll.
Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is a cool shot to capture from afar, preferable from a yacht ;)
5. The friendly people and warm, welcoming atmosphere.
6. And let’s not forget the crisp beautiful weather in the month of April & May.
And there you have it, some quick highlights to cover some sights and things to do in Charleston. There’s a lot more that I haven’t mentioned for sure. But these should be a good list of introduction to go through.
