Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam
Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam, a historic five-star luxury hotel, used to be the home of the leading Amsterdam shipping companies.
There’s a picky side of me when it comes to choosing hotels. Though I know I’d be spending less time in a hotel room, I just can’t settle for less. It has to be pretty good or one of the best out there. I’m talking about comfort, and where it is located. And location is an important thing to keep in mind when you’re traveling to Amsterdam.
Amsterdam is pretty small. The center of the city is Damrak, or Dam Square, which is surrounded by stores, government buildings, and tram stops. Also, the Red Light District is as center as you could go, but this street of sex shops, bars, and overall nightlife may not suit for some tourists like me. This may work for partiers, but not for me.
The kind of hotels you’ll find in the center are mostly boutique hotels. These have tiny rooms. And I need space. I need my king sized bed. I need a decent size bathroom… With that being said, I usually stay a little bit farther out of the center. And Grand Hotel Amrâth is exactly the perfect hotel I was looking for. It is not exactly at the center, but it’s very close to the center. The location is pretty good.

Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam is a historic five-star luxury hotel. It used to be the home of the leading Amsterdam shipping companies. The architecture reveals original details – wood paneling, stained glass art, sculptures, etc. It is equally beautiful and classic inside.
As I entered the lobby, I noticed the marble and stained glasses, wrought-iron interior details. I was then greeted by very friendly, and professional staff. I have to say they’re very helpful and very accommodating.
My room was elegant– the high-ceiling and classic vibrant fabrics with modern amenities. The bed was comfortable, and yes I got a king bed. The space was just right. Not too big, but it’s bigger than most boutique hotels.
The bathroom was clean, spacious and contemporary. My only complaint is that the bathroom didn’t have a ventilation fan. It was explained to me when I asked about it – the reason for not having ventilation fans is because of the way the building was built, it wasn’t designed to accommodate ventilation fan system back then. And it would take a lot of work and money for them to re-build the hotel to accommodate ventilation fan systems.
Overall, I was very pleased during my stay. I’d definitely recommend this hotel. Trust me, you’ll be spending a lot of time for leisurely walks around Amsterdam, and at night, all you’ll ever want is a nice, quiet place where you’ll comfortably sleep in.
What I Loved:
Friendly, and very accommodating staff
Good location
Classic meets modern amenities
Elegant rooms
Spacious bathroom
What I Disliked:
No ventilation fan in the bathroom
They get booked so quickly you have to book about six months in advance
It’ll take some getting used to finding your room. At first, it can be a little bit confusing (especially if you’re someone who doesn’t have any sense of direction like me *wink*)
