Destination Antwerp: Precious Like Diamonds

Here are top things to see in Antwerp, Belgium for a day trip.

To state it simply, Antwerp is a charming and cool city. It is a gem on its own way. I had no idea that the city was known for fashion and diamonds – and who would’ve thought that the first diamond was cut in Antwerp in 1476 according to legend! And it became the international centre of diamond industry because of the thriving diamond cutting establishment in diamond quarter. Admittedly, the first thing that came to mind about Antwerp, is Belgian beer, and Belgian Chocolates.

There’s something about the city – the contrast of its character… It is lively, but chill. It is classic but modern. It is stylish but also timeless. They hold something precious and rich, but they are modest. To think that Antwerp’s most precious trade involves diamonds, they sure don’t broadcast it to the whole world.

My trip to Belgium was quite limited – it was a planned day trip from Rotterdam, Netherlands. We took the train from Rotterdam to Antwerp, and it was only about a 45-minute ride. If you’re ever around Amsterdam or Rotterdam, I recommend you take a train ride for a day trip to Antwerp.

Here are top things to see in Antwerp for a day trip:

Antwerp’s Central Station is stunning inside and out, with beautiful architecture, making it worth a stroll .The station is three levels high, but very inviting and easy to navigate. Inside is a grand staircase leading to the main platform and shopping and cafes. I have to say, it is one of the most beautiful train station I’ve ever been to in Europe.

Grote Markt means Great Market. It is Antwerp’s most popular attraction in the heart of the old city.

  • 16th century guildhalls

  • Renaissance-style Stadhuis

  • Many restaurants and cafés

  • Brabo statue (a mythical Roman soldier who was said to have killed a giant)

Walk down the Meir Shopping Street for shopping. I have to admit, that while the street is beautiful to walk through, the biggest issue I have is that they lack local, unique boutiques or stores. It’s just full of your typical brand stores now.

Have some chocolates at the best, and considered number one chocolate shop in the world today, The Chocolate line. All I can say is that they have the best chocolates, and they come in all shapes, sizes, and oh so many delightful flavors. This one thing is a must. You should never miss it.

And lastly, visit the oldest building in Antwerp, the Het Steen Castle. It used to be called Antwerp Castle. As you enter the castle, you’ll see a statue of a giant and two people. The giant’s name is Lange Wapper who was said to have invaded the inhabitants during medieval times. While there’s nothing to see inside the castle, it certainly is an interesting stop. It has courtyards and walkways that you can walk through and see the riverfront.

And that concluded my day trip to Antwerp. Not bad at all. I really like the city. I can see myself going back there again in the near future!
