Destination Prague: The Enchanted Kingdom
Top things to see and do in Prague.
The minute I landed in Prague, it instantly felt like a city in Europe that’s like no other. There’s something classic about the city. The roads, the architecture, the atmosphere… it felt like it took me back in time, to a very unfamiliar, charming world. From the airport, my cab driver picked me up and drove me to the condo I rented for a few days. As we drove to the condo, I knew Prague has won my heart.
I fell in love with the amazing city. In fact, it’s one of my favorite cities in Europe. The medieval streets, the baroque style churches, historical bridges, the mesmerizing Gothic grace and Renaissance architecture seems to be competing left and right as you explore.
Though it was very chilly in November, it felt like that almost-winter weather made the visit more magical. I saw Prague on a sunny day, on a grey, cloudy day, and on a rainy day. It didn’t matter what the weather is, this city is just magical. Believe it or not, it is even magical in December – they have Christmas markets all around. But if you’re ever going to visit Prague in October or November, make sure you pack thick coats and rain coats. It could rain quite a bit.
I’d say Prague is the kind of place you’d want to visit for more than just a few days. I’d recommend a week, or two. There’s just a lot of things to do and see! But if you’re pretty limited in time, here are top things to see and do in Prague:
Explore the Old Town Square
This is the heart of the city. This historical square was founded in the 12th century, and the perfect place to admire all the wonderful architecture Prague has to offer. Noted historical attractions are in this square, such as Jan Huis monument, Old Town Hall, Church of St. Nicholas, the Rococo Kinský Palace, and a lot more.
I was lucky that the condo I rented was up on the 11th floor. I had a very nice view of the Old Town Square from my window.
There are a lot of restaurants nearby offering outdoor patio dining. It’s good for people-watching while enjoying some beer. It’s considered to be one of the best Europe. I encourage you to give it a try!
Admire the Astronomical Clock
The astronomical clock is the world’s oldest operating astronomical clock. It’s important that you have to time your visit by the astronomical clock to see the clock in action – a show at the top of the hour with 12 apostles passing through the window right above the astronomical dial. I’d suggest being there 10-15 minutes to get a good spot for photos since this is a very well-known tourist attraction.
Visit St. Vitus Cathedral
Admire the architecture of the largest church in Prague. Gothic cathedrals are always beautiful to me, and St. Vitus Cathedral is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. This is a stunning church you shouldn’t miss to visit.
So rich in history, this church is very important to the religious and cultural life of Czech Republic. This is where treasures from the 14th century mosaic of the Last Judgment, and the tops of St Wenceslas is being housed.
I’ve learned that it was from 1344 when the foundation stone was laid y Emperor Charles IV, but the last parts of the church dates only from 1929 and 1953.
Wander around the Prague Castle
You’ll need a few hours to thoroughly wander around this largest castle in Europe – with more than 700 rooms. The castle features Romanesque to Gothic architectures. The complex includes main attraction such as the Royal Palace, St. Vitus Cathedral and St. George’s Basilica.
Take a Stroll Across the Charles Bridge
The bridge spans Vltava River, and also the home of 30 mostly baroque statues and statuaries. The enchanting views of the river is something you shouldn’t miss. It will be very crowded but it’s worth it. The earlier you go, the better. Sunset makes up for perfect photos as well.
